Passport for adults (18 years+)

APPLYING FOR A DANISH PASSPORT

Regardless of your age, you must submit the passport application form in person at any Danish Embassy, Danish Consulate General or  ‘Borgerservicecenter’ in Denmark.

Please be advised that when applying for a Danish passport, it is a condition that you are a Danish citizen and that you are registered as such in the CPR system. If you do not have a Danish CPR number, or if you have acquired another nationality, you must provide proof of your Danish nationality by submitting relevant documentation.

If you are registered with another nationality in the CPR system, you cannot apply for a Danish passport until the information of your nationality is rectified.  You are thus required to contact the “Folkeregister” in the municipality where you last held residence or where the registration took place. You can check whether you are registered as a Danish citizen by contacting the “Folkeregister” here or if you have MITID by logging on to borger.dk.

The Embassy will take a digital photograph and collect fingerprint as well as a digital signature. All of these will be used in your new biometric passport.

Adult passports are normally valid for 10 years, unless you are born outside Denmark and under 22 years old. In this case, we can issue passport until the day before your 22nd birthday.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

1.Passport application form – completed and signed. You can find and download the application form here

2. Original birth certificate if you are in possession of it

3.Your current passport

4.Your original certificate of Danish Nationality, if you have been issued one (Statsborgerretsbevis/Indfødsretsbevis).

5.Original documentation of your name change if you have changed your name after the issuance of your current passport. The name change has to be reflected in the CPR register before the passport can be issued.

Please note that the Danish Embassy has the right to ask for further documentation if necessary. If so requested, please ensure that the Mission receives the additional documentation within 30 days of the date of application, as information contained in the application is automatically cancelled after this period. A new application would thus have to be submitted together with a new application fee.

Passport for minors (under 18 years)

APPLYING FOR A DANISH PASSPORT FOR A MINOR

All children are required to have their own passport when travelling.

Children below the age of 12 can apply for a passport at a Danish Embassy or consulate.

Children above the age of 12 can only apply for a passport at a Danish Embassy, as fingerprints and a digital signature need to be captured.

If you are currently in Denmark, you may also apply at any ‘Borgerservice center’ in Denmark.

Both parents and the child (irrespective of age) must be present when submitting the passport application.

When applying for babies and very young children (0-4 years), please bring a photo, which meets the Requirements for passport photos

Passports for children aged 0 - 2 are valid for 2 years
Passports for children aged 2 - 18 are valid for 5 years

Please be advised that when applying for a Danish passport, you must provide proof of your child’s Danish nationality by submitting relevant documentation. Please note that a CPR number is not a requirement and it is still possible to apply for a passport without one.

If your child already holds a CPR number and is registered in the CPR system, he/she must be registered as a Danish citizen in the CPR system. If your child is registered with another nationality in the CPR system, you cannot apply for a Danish passport until information of the nationality is rectified.  You are thus required to contact the “Folkeregister” in the municipality where you last held residence or where the registration took place. You can check whether your child is registered as a Danish citizen by contacting the “Folkeregister” here.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

7.Your child’s original certificate of Danish Nationality, if such one has been issued (Statsborgerretsbevis/Indfødsretsbevis).

8.Original documentation of your child’s name change if name has been changed since the issuance of your child’s current passport. The name change has to be reflected in the CPR register before the passport can be issued

If so requested, please ensure that the Embassy receives the additional documentation within 30 days of the date of application, as information contained in the application is automatically cancelled after this period. A new application would thus have to be submitted together with a new application fee.

Recognition of foreign certificates: If the document was not issued in Denmark, the Embassy will need to assess whether it is genuine and can be recognized in Denmark. Documents from certain countries require that the documents are legalised or have an Apostille authentication. Please note that this must have been completed before the passport application is submitted to the Embassy or Consulate. Please see the following linkto UIM's website where you can find advice and links.

CONSENT TO PASSPORT?

According to Danish law, both parents must give their consent every time they apply for a Danish passport for their child until he/she reaches the age of 18.

If one parent has acquired sole custody/parental responsibility, documentation to this effect must be presented together with the passport application and only one consent must be given.

If the other parent does not live in the country where you are applying from, consent may be given at any other Danish Embassy or affiliated consulate that is more convenient for the absent parent.

If the other parent lives in Denmark, consent may be given at any Danish municipality that is more convenient for the absent parent.

Furthermore, digital consent can be given if the absent parent has Nem-ID. Visit this web page and fill in the relevant consent. If you are giving consent for more than one child, the process must be completed for each child that is applying for a Danish passport.

Passport processing time

Due to strict security restrictions all passports are printed in Denmark. It takes approximately 3-5 weeks for the Embassy or a nearby Danish consulate to receive your new passport.

Lost passport

If your current passport has been lost or stolen, please see further information below under “Passport Extensions, Emergency and Lost Passports”.

Passport collection

When your new passport has arrived, the Embassy or nearby Danish consulate will notify you directly - preferably by e-mail. Please follow the instructions in the e-mail with regards to collection.

Passport by registered post

For an additional fee, we can post the new passport to you. In such cases you must leave your current passport with the Embassy.

important: Please remember to bring the old passport for cancellation. If you have valid visas or residence permits in your old passport, kindly inform the Embassy accordingly.  Always check with the local authorities whether your visa and/or residence permit can be transferred to a new passport.

Applying for a new passport during holiday in Denmark

It is possible – and cheaper – to apply for a new Danish passport at a municipality (kommune) in Denmark. All Danish citizens can apply for a passport at the Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservicecenter) in any municipality. It is not necessary for you to reside in or in other way be attached to the municipality. You can find addresses of Citizen Service Centres at www.kommune.dk.

We recommend that you apply for a passport during your stay in Denmark well ahead of your departure, in order to receive the new passport before you leave Denmark. Alternatively you can make an arrangement with the Citizen Service Centre to send your new passport via courier service to the Embassy in Dublin. The new passport can be collected at the Embassy and the expired passport cancelled. An additional fee to the Embassy applies.
