Citizenship

This page offers you information regarding maintaining or applying for Danish citizenship.

Please visit the New in Denmark website and browse through the subsections in the menu on the left before contacting the Embassy regarding specific rules on applying for or maintaining your Danish citizenship.

Dual/multiple citizenship

Dual/multiple citizenship, if obtained automatically at birth, has always been accepted by Denmark.

However, a new Danish law about dual/multiple citizenship has come into force on 1st September 2015. This means that Danish citizenship holders will now be able to apply for another citizenship/further citizenships without losing their Danish citizenship. Those persons who have already lost their Danish citizenship will be able to apply to regain it during a 5-year period from 1st September 2015 to 31st August 2020.

Please read the information about dual/multiple citizenship here.

Citizenship through birth

Your child may also have acquired Irish citizenship at birth, follow the link to read more if that is the case.

As a general rule, Danish nationals born abroad will have to apply for retention of Danish nationality before the age of 22. Read more about this here.
